Xgeronimo is the artistic name of Sergei Ivanov, a British visual artist and former art director whose practice moves between abstract painting, works on paper, handmade objects, symbolic operations, experimental film and artificial intelligence. He studied philosophy in Georgia, the former USSR, and worked professionally in art direction in London and Berlin. Extended periods of travel through India and South America contributed to the development of his independent artistic practice, shifting his attention from commercial image-making toward material experimentation, symbolic action and the relationship between art and the unknown. After leaving advertising in 2016, he concentrated on developing his own artistic projects.
More recently, Xgeronimo has extended this investigative practice through creative experiments with artificial intelligence. His projects include Algorithmic Pilgrim, an ongoing collaboration between a solo traveller and an AI companion; The Image Learns to Read Itself, which explores machine translations of handmade imagery; Morphomata, a study of visual transformation; and PHOENIX: THE ORACLE, a playable system that interprets the record of its own events. He is also developing ART, MAGIC & AI, a book exploring humanity’s relationship with the unknown through artistic practice, magical traditions and artificial intelligence. Across these activities, his central concern remains the same: art as a means of initiating encounters rather than simply producing representations.
