Processes & Rituals
The artwork begins before the image exists.
Many of my works begin as operations rather than compositions.
I establish an intention and select materials, colours, gestures and symbols according to their particular qualities.
An Offering to the Water
A work on paper enters a temporary relationship with its surroundings.
About these operations
Fire, water, pigments, organic substances, and asemic writing may become participants in the process.
Some actions are controlled. Others produce reactions that I cannot fully anticipate.
The operation matters more than the resulting image.
Sometimes the artifact survives. Sometimes it is altered, repeated, or destroyed.
These films document moments of making — physical actions through which an intention encounters matter.
They are not instructions for reproducing an artwork. They are fragments of the work itself.
Paintings in the Wind
Paintings leave the studio and enter an outdoor environment.
Liquid Charms
Liquid, pigment and gesture meet on the surface of a work in progress.
The Painting Is Not Finished
Colour, marks and gestures become part of an unfolding symbolic operation.
Drawing Without Seeing
In the first part of the film, I draw blindfolded, with a cloth covering my eyes.
Photographic documentation
